Three Case Studies on Developing Partnerships to Support Metrology Education
Abstract (MSC 2009/NCSLI 2009)
These case studies address the worldwide problem regarding the need for formalized metrology education. This study will examine three cases that focus on the requirements for developing ongoing partnerships to support metrology education in a variety of settings. The three cases are:
1. Identifies the partnership established between University of North Carolina, Charlotte (UNCC) and Cummings, Inc. This partnership integrates a metrology curriculum into the industry affiliate program at UNCC by identifying the role metrology plays in manufacturing.
2. This case examines the four phases in the development of the MESURA program sponsored by Centro Nacional de Metrologia of Mexico (CENAM). The MESURA Program specifically addresses the measurement needs of industry coupled with metrological training in Mexico.
3. NCSLI and Arizona State University, College of Technology and Innovation, explored the role academia, industry and technical organizations play in program development. The approach is to leverage off the established Joint Alliance of Companies Managing Education for Technology (JACMET) consortium, which provides continuing education guidance for engineering professionals.
The case study review concludes with “lessons-learned” and offers a set of recommendations for initiating contacts and developing ongoing successful partnerships.
