The Benefits of Automated RF & Microwave Testing for Calibration, Compliance, and Customer Satisfaction
Abstract (Cal Lab The International Journal for Metrology; Jul-Aug-Sep 2009, p. 37)
This article examines the long-term benefits derived from Automated RF and Microwave testing for calibration, compliance, and customer satisfaction. The results from the Equipment Management Technology’s installation of several automated RF and Microwave test systems. These test systems showed a reduction in overall cost, increased profits, shortened turnaround times, and improved customer satisfaction. Changes in ROI, expenses, reliability, rework, and staffing requirements were some of the positive and measurable outcomes.
While the long-term benefits of testing/calibration automation are generally agreed upon, there remains the question of quantifying of the elements of the performance measurements (the measurands) to validate profitability, shortened turnaround times, improved quality, and customer satisfaction. Many factors used today do not have well defined determinants. One reason may be that, typical performance measurements (the determinants) are typically selected to maximize efficiency or effectiveness. What may be missing is establishing the optimal mix of performance measurands to provide the best results. [i.e. what you measure - is what you get!]
This case study outlines some options that may be useful to justify and manage automated testing. The goal is to increases throughput, reduce overall operating cost, and still meet the demands of increased volumes, and reporting timelines coupled with improved consistency and reliability of data. Automated RF and Microwave testing appears to satisfy all of these requirements.
